Quick freezes expose the pipe runs that receive the least protection
North Texas cold snaps are often brief, but temperatures can fall hard enough to freeze water in a vulnerable line overnight. The greatest exposure is usually not every pipe in the house. It is the plumbing along exterior walls, in garages and attics, at hose connections, and through unheated utility areas where cold air reaches the pipe quickly.
Thawing is only part of the work. As ice expands inside a pipe, it puts stress on the line. We check the affected run as it thaws, because a split or leak may only become apparent once water begins moving again.
A previous freeze points to a place that needs attention before the next cold spell, but it does not rule out other exposed runs. Insulation, sealed gaps around pipe penetrations, protection for outdoor connections, and heat around vulnerable indoor piping each address a different way cold reaches the line.
